Julia Michaels: The Hot New Artist In 2017
Julia Michaels has become the hot new artist so far in 2017. Her debut single “Issues” (J/Republic) is an excellent entry and should serve her well in the weeks and months to come. Hey Violet has been fighting the good fight and it appears to be paying off big time. Their “Guys My Age” (Capitol) took a slow and steady start but things are going their way as this track builds strong numbers. Calum Scott is another artist that has been fighting the good fight. Also a bit of a slow starter, his Dancing On My Own” (Capitol) is now finally starting to be taken seriously and he’s quite deserving of this success,
Lady Gaga has a million reasons to be happy the days Not only did her free performance at this year’s Super Bowl pay off big dividends, it has also helped her current single “Million Reasons” (Interscope) to get the attention it so deserves. It was quite the performance from the Gaga that will no doubt serve her well in the weeks and months to come. Kaleo is getting some love at Top40 and why not. From the moment I heard “Way Down We Go” (Atlantic) I got the feeling that this one could do some grand things at the format. You might want to spend a little more time with this one if you are not already slamming it into your programming schedule. Give this one a shot for sure.
Fitz And The Tantrums have also been grinding their current single for all that it’s worth. First building at Hot AC, their “Hand Clap” (Elektra/WEA) is now making its way to the Top40 format. We’ll see how this all plays out in the coming weeks but they have most certainly got the most out of this cleaver pop anthem. Ed Sheeran is back after a very short break and make no mistake about that. His new “Shape Of You” (Atlantic) is nothing short of music magic and this one has some very strong potential.
Bruno Mars is back where he belongs and that’s at Top40. After his stunning Grammy performance, his new “That’s What I Like” (Atlantic) is showing some big time progress and it appears that he has yet another winner on his hands. Marian Hill has created quite the buzz at the format. The new and grand master single “Down” (Photo Finish/Republic) is brilliant from start to finish and you can hang a big old gold star on this one to be sure. The pairing of Ariana Grande with Future has turned out to be a very smart move. “Everyday” (Republic) puts the spotlight on both of these multi-talented artists and this could be another #1 for both of them
Starley has a good thing going and make no mistake about that. “Call On Me” (Epic) is so good that you can’t put it down even if you try. Give this one a few spins around the block and watch the phones and requests line up big time. The red hot and brilliant newcomers Horn And Holland have teamed up with Sam Trego for the powerful and jazzy “Oh Love” (Ind). This one really deserves your immediate attention. I’m also loving the new Zara Larsson and Ty Dolla $ign single. “So Good” (Ten/Epic). It’s “so good” & this duo has put the music magic into every frame of this track.
James Arthur is getting some well-deserved love for his single. “Say You Won’t Let Go” (Columbia) continues to build a world of believers and he so deserves each and every one of them. John Mayer is also getting some spins at Top40 and that’s a good thing for him. His “Love On The Weekend” (Columbia) gets him back in the game so to speak but he’ll need some additional support from more stations if he wants that to continue. The pairing of the Weekend with Daft Punk appears to be a solid winner. “I Feel It Coming” (XO/Universal Republic) is another strong track from this new dynamic duo.
Chuck Murphy has a good thing going. His current “Peace Be With You” (One West) is moving to the top of the charts from here to Country and what a great track this is. Also getting some well-deserved love and attention is the multi-talented Renee Zawawi. She dazzled us with her debut “Happy Hour” and her current “Mom” single is now moving to the top of the charts. Both Renee and Chuck are nominees for this year’s New Music Awards and both deserve your love and support. You can help them and all of your favorites turn nominations into wins by your votes at newmusicweekly.com.
