Top40 For Summer
The Weekend continues to be the hot guy at Top40 radio. His latest in “Can’t Feel My Face” (Universal Republic) takes him a few more steps towards greatness. With his last single going to #1 you can bet that this new offering will follow the same path. Young pop star Shawn Mendes has a good thing going and make no mistake about that. The You Tube sensation is taking “Stitches” (Island) out for a spin and the results have been quite impressive. Look for some strong weeks ahead for this delightful track.
MKTO are back at it and in a very big way. “Bad Girls” (Columbia) is their latest and our music and program directors are all over this one big time. Kelly Clarkson also has another gem to add to her staggering collection. “Invincible” (RCA/RLG) picks up right where “Heartbeat” left off and this one could go all the way. Adam Lambert has finally turned things around. After some touring with Queen as their lead vocalist, Adam is now putting all his bets on “Ghost Town” (WB/WEA) and that is truly paying off as radio loves it.
Theory Of A Deadman have a new single out at radio that is gaining some traction. “Angel” (Roadrunner) is the one that the band is pulling for and for good reason, it’s one of their best to date. I also really love the new release from Florence & The Machine. She and her gang take it much higher with “Ship To Wreck” (Universal/UMG) that is perfect for Summer. We’ll see how it all plays out in the coming weeks but so far so good.
Rob Thomas is back at Top40 and that’s always a good thing for us music lovers. “Trust You” (Emblem/Atlantic) is his latest jam and this one needs a spot on your rotation list.
Tinashe is rocking the free world with more goods and services. “All Hands On Deck” (RCA/RLG) is the new one and please spend a little extra time on this one as it is quite amazing. Newcomer Kathryn Dean is getting all worked up about a new single release. “Be My Sin” (Magnetic Red) is the one she’s pushing and she has every right to be making some noise. This will be worth your time and make no mistake about it.
Sam Smith continues to rule the male vocal category (except if you’re Ed Sheeran). “Like I Can” (Capitol) shows Sam’s other more powerful side and this is a song that could add to his already powerful stock. Flo Rida has teamed up with Robin Thicke & Verdine White for a real delight. “I Don’t Like It, I Love It” (Poe Boy/Atlantic) could possibly be the anthem of the Summer so I’d be all over this one if I were programming a Top40 radio station. Watch this one take off like a California wildfire.
Elle King may just have one of the most exciting singles to come around so far this year. Her new “Ex’s & Oh’s” (RCA/RLG) is so good that you just can’t put it down. This is a musical treasure to be sure. James Bay continues to build his fortunes in the music industry. The single “Hold Back The River” (Republic) might just help to get him wherever he desires to travel. This guys is the real deal and make no mistake about that. It’s great to see a real musician be taken seriously in today’s music industry.
The pairing of Meghan Trainor and John Legend might be just what radio has been waiting for. “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” (Epic) is their latest and what a great track this is. You really need to give it a few spins around the block and watch your phones and emails to crazy. One of my favorite acts ala Flaunt is having quite the run at both Top40 and Hot AC. It’s all do to their latest single “National Anthem” (Anticodon) that is just out of this world. It’s been on the “most added” charts here at New Music Weekly for a few weeks now and our music and program directors are raving about it big time. This is our special Summer issue so go out there and get on the boat of your choice and have some fun for a change. I’ll have more for you on the greatest hits of Top40 next time – right here.
