MUSIC CITY SPIN: “I’m the friend who edits your love letters Gives advice, holds you when you’re blue But what you haven’t realized, I hurt inside from jealousy and pain I wanna be your lover All I am is your go-between” Chuck Whiting, from his song “Go-Between” (A hapless chap does everything he can to win the love of a cute but feisty and troublesome damsel in distress providing advice on the phone at all hours of the night driving her to romantic rendezvous watching as she always picks the other guy. Will he ever win her love? That’s the premise behind my latest single, “Go Between.” I wrote it back in 2003 as a tongue-in-cheek take on teenage romance. Oh, the heartache. The tune begins with a sad, dreamy musical intro, then leaps into upbeat “retropolitan” pop. I have to admit I was influenced by John Lennon, who produced an entire album of tunes dating back to the 1950s. Special thanks to my co-producer, Tim Thompson (a remarkable musician and sound engineer). We were able to create a 1960s retro feel with Beatlesque vocal harmonies, piano, synth, guitar, and percussion. Just a footnote: I wrote this song on guitar (unusual for me). You’ll probably hear a little country in it, too (hey I’m from the South). It marks a departure from the romantic piano ballads people are used to hearing, and it was a lot of fun to record.
