The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has awarded a $105,330 grant to Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR) to enhance its coverage of recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, which devastated Western North Carolina in September 2024. The 18-month grant will support a full-time reporter dedicated to covering recovery efforts in the 14-county region impacted by the storm. Funding will also provide resources for editing, travel, and necessary equipment.

“We are pleased to support Blue Ridge Public Radio’s efforts to inform local Western North Carolina communities as they recover from this disaster,” said CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison. “Rebuilding takes time, and no place is ever the same following a disaster. This grant will help BPR provide essential news and information to and about those affected by Hurricane Helene.”

Hurricane Helene brought widespread destruction to the region, triggering flooding and mudslides, downing trees and structures, and destroying critical infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Dozens of lives were lost in the storm’s aftermath.

Ele Ellis, CEO and general manager of Blue Ridge Public Radio, emphasized the importance of the grant in helping BPR fulfill its mission. “This support from CPB is invaluable to our mission of serving the people of Western North Carolina,” said Ellis. “With this funding, we can continue to provide comprehensive coverage and vital information – freely available with no paywall, for our broadcast and digital audiences. That will aid in the recovery process and help our community rebuild stronger than ever.”

Public media outlets like BPR play a critical role in local communities, especially during and after crises. Their local ownership and deep ties to the communities they serve allow them to provide timely, trusted coverage that supports informed recovery efforts.
