Jimmy Buffett, the iconic singer, songwriter and entertainer known for his laid-back, tropical tunes, has died. He was 76. “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement posted to Buffett’s official website and social media pages. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.” The statement did not say where Buffett died or give a cause of death.

Born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, James William Buffett grew up with a passion for music. He initially started his journey in the industry as a folk singer in the 1960s, but it was his unique fusion of country, rock, and Caribbean influences that would define his signature style. Buffett’s songs often transported listeners to a world of beaches, margaritas, and carefree living, earning him the affectionate title of “Captain Parrothead” among his dedicated fan base.

Buffett’s most iconic song, “Margaritaville,” released in 1977, became an anthem for escapism and the laid-back lifestyle. The song’s catchy chorus and vivid storytelling resonated with a wide audience, turning it into a timeless classic that continues to be played at beach parties and gatherings worldwide.

Throughout his career, Jimmy Buffett released numerous albums, each filled with stories of beach bums, pirates, and wanderlust. Albums like “A1A,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” and “Son of a Son of a Sailor” solidified his status as a musical legend. His live performances were legendary, known for their energetic atmosphere, tropical decor, and passionate fan base known as “Parrotheads.”

Beyond his music, Buffett was a prolific author, penning several books, including novels and memoirs, further showcasing his storytelling talents. He was also involved in various philanthropic endeavors and environmental causes, reflecting his deep connection to the oceans and coastal regions that often served as the backdrop for his songs. Beginning in 1987, he began to turn “Margaritaville,” a celebration of loafing, into a billion-dollar empire of restaurants, resorts and frozen concoctions.

Jimmy Buffett’s impact on the world of music and entertainment is immeasurable. He brought joy, relaxation, and a sense of adventure to countless individuals through his music and performances. His unique blend of genres and his ability to transport listeners to an idyllic paradise made him a true musical icon.

Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Savannah and Sarah; and son, Cameron.
