Hundreds of mourners converged on the GREATER GRACE TEMPLE in DETROIT to mourn the passing of the city’s own, ARETHA FRANKLIN, reported USA TODAY. The ongoing all-day ceremony has been filled with tributes from a wide array of dignitaries. Among those offering eulogies included former President BILL CLINTON (“She had the voice of a generation, maybe the voice of a century”), SONY MUSIC’s CLIVE DAVIS (“Aretha was a true genius of AMERICAN music, a significant part of history… Her voice will be influencing others for centuries to come”), former U.S. Attorney General ERIC HOLDER, the Rev. JESSE JACKSON, former DETROIT PISTONS star ISIAH THOMAS, Rev. AL SHARPTON (who chided PRESIDENT TRUMP about a lack of “respect,” a theme repeated throughout the evening) and MOTOWN star SMOKEY ROBINSON, as well as her children, grandchildren and nieces.
Among those attending include ARIANA GRANDE (who reprised her recent “Tonight Show” performance of “[You Make Me Feel Like] A Natural Woman” in a thigh-high skirt that caused some online griping), CHAKA KHAN, JENNIFER HUDSON (a slowly building, ultimately transcendent “Amazing Grace”), THE CLARK SISTERS, MARTHA REEVES, WHOOPI GOLDBERG, FAITH HILL, RONALD ISLEY, FANTASIA (shedding her shoes for a melisma-bending, gospel-infused “You’ve Got A Friend”), LEBRON JAMES, TYLER PERRY, GLADYS KNIGHT, SHIRLEY CAESAR, JENNIFER HOLLIDAY, YOLANDA ADAMS, CICELY TYSON, U.S. House Rep. MAXINE WATERS, former DETROIT Mayor DENNIS ARCHER and current Mayor MIKE DUGGAN, NATION OF ISLAM leader LOUIS FARRAKHAN, MICHIGAN Gov. RICK SNYDER, and U.S. House Rep. DEBBIE DINGELL. Former President BARACK OBAMA and former first lady MICHELLE OBAMA, who are giving a eulogy at Sen. JOHN MCCAIN’s memorial service in WASHINGTON, D.C. this weekend, sent a letter, which the Rev. SHARPTON will read during the service.
